Fotografia sincera: uma sessão de maternidade em casa - Vancouver, Canada.
“I didn’t even have time to shower” were some of Taylor’s first words when I arrived at her gorgeous little cozy apartment in the West End area in Vancouver, Canada.
Taylor had texted me to capture some photos of her one month old baby, little Ruby, in the middle of the Canadian winter. Those who live here knows how little light we get on winter, and photographers know how much harder this can make our lives. That day was pouring rain and, I’m not gonna lie, walking wasn’t an option for me so I drove 3 blocks to meet Tay and Ruby for some quick shots.
When Taylor told me she didn’t even have time to shower, that it was her first time fitting into jeans after giving birth and her husband wasn’t home due to prior commitments my answer was ‘relax, we’re only photographing Ruby today’.
Yeah, sure.
As I normally do, when I entered her home I started scouting for the natural light since I rarely work with artificial lighting. I am a big fan of candid photography which means that I like my sessions to have as little interference as possible.
Of course I guide people into doing activities that feels natural to them, but I won’t make them pose and feel awkward (aside from exposing them to my terrible jokes), as I will try to work only with the natural light that the weather forecast and the room provide and will normally suggest just a gentle natural hair and makeup if the client really needs it. Needless to say I hardly ever retouch, unless it’s specifically requested.
Once I scouted the perfect locations at the apartment and selected the tiny little outfits for baby Ruby I was able to take some gorgeous pictures with a side morning light coming through the windows, that offered a gorgeous pearl-like light when combined with the thin off white curtains.
But as it normally goes for newborn photography, baby starts crying. So when Taylor begins to chance and breastfeed her precious little thing, I took some shots just for fun. And it turns out that they are my absolutely favourite photos from that session.
There’s a love so beautifully candid on maternity, carried with the feeling of being the caretaker of something so precious, added to the caution of being a first-mom that you really don’t need any directions to capture the feeling in there. The most maternal mundane of the acts (and I say mundane in the sense of common, but not as a synonym to simple by any means) such as feeding the baby and changing their diapers are the best posing directions I can ever give to my mom clients to capture the best images.
I hope you like the maternity photos as much as I do.
If you wish to register your candid maternity photos the same way send me a message and let’s create something beautiful together.
Obrigada,
Mafe.
